Type is individual – as one undoubtedly notices when comparing the handwriting of different people or trying to decipher it. The same applies to typography – the handling of type.
Its use in art is no exception – or is it? Is it an information carrier, a visual means of expression or merely a decorative element here? However it is used, for the artists gathered here it is an elementary tool, and an individual ‘handwriting’ emerges in each case – whether wanted, unwanted, suppressed or consciously created.
In Artistype, 14 outstanding international artists talk about their typographic works in interviews and statements: Fiona Banner, Robert Barry, Martin Boyce, Alejandro Cesarco, Shannon Ebner, Liam Gillick, Bethan Huws, Tsang Kin-Wah, Tania Mouraud, Marcus Neufanger, Rose Nolan, Ed Ruscha, Mitchell Syrop and Lawrence Weiner.
