Ewa Partum – Active Poetry (1971/2025)


Ewa Partum (born in 1945 near Warsaw, Poland) is a central figure in postwar avant-garde Conceptual and feminist art. While living behind the Iron Curtain, she began developing the idea of Active Poetry in the early 1970s—conducting events in the course of which she scattered white letters punched out of thin cardboard at different locations. The act of writing becomes a process of disseminating letters across landscapes and urban spaces. Playfully, she created a performative poetry, which manifests itself as a poetic process. At that time, the letters she poetically misused were established in socialist everyday life for their use by public institutions and organizations to craft posters and signs with propaganda messages for official occasions such as political rallies to celebrate national holidays. 
For this iteration of Active Poetry, the artist used the beginning of James Joyce’s epochal novel Ulysses (1920) and meticulously counted the number of the individual letters needed. The total of 4,500 characters were distributed as punched-out letters on the 150 boxes in this edition.


Ewa Partum (1945 in der Nähe von Warschau in Polen geboren) ist eine zentrale Figur der konzeptuellen und feministischen Kunst der Nachkriegsavantgarde. Während sie noch hinter dem so genannten Eisernen Vorhang lebte, begann sie Anfang der 1970er Jahre die Idee einer Active Poetry zu entwickeln. Im Rahmen von künstlerischen Aktionen verstreute sie aus leichter Pappe ausgestanzte weiße Buchstaben an unterschiedlichen Orten. Der Akt des Schreibens wird damit zu einer ganz wörtlichen Verbreitung von Buchstaben in Natur- wie Stadtlandschaften. Auf spielerische Weise entwickelt sie so eine performative Poesie, die sich als ein poetischer Prozess manifestiert. Die von ihr zweckentfremdeten Buchstaben wurden im damaligen sozialistischen Alltag von öffentlichen Institutionen und Organisationen verwendet, um Plakate und Schilder mit propagandistischen Botschaften für offizielle Ereignisse wie Kundgebungen anlässlich von Nationalfeiertagen zu gestalten.
Für die vorliegende Active Poetry griff die Künstlerin auf den Anfang von James Joyces einflussreichen Roman Ulysses (1920) zurück und zählte, wie oft jeder einzelne Buchstabe des Alphabets darin vorkam. Die insgesamt 4500 Zeichen wurden als ausgestanzte Lettern auf die 150 Schachteln dieser Edition verteilt.
